🔐 𝗜𝗔𝗠 𝘃𝘀 𝗣𝗔𝗠: 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗱𝘀 🔐
Identity & Access Management (IAM) and Privileged Access Management (PAM) are two pillars of modern cybersecurity, but they often get mixed up. Here’s a quick breakdown:
✅ 𝗜𝗔𝗠 (𝗜𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 & 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁)
Manages who can access what
Covers all users (employees, customers, vendors)
Handles regular access like apps, email, SaaS tools
Tools: Okta, Azure AD, ForgeRock, Ping Identity
Focus: Who logged in and what they accessed
✅ 𝗣𝗔𝗠 (𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗱 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁)
Manages who can access sensitive systems
Covers only privileged users (admins, DBAs, root users)
Handles admin-level access (servers, databases)
Tools: CyberArk, BeyondTrust, Delinea, HashiCorp
Focus: What commands were executed during elevated access
💡 Think of IAM as your building security desk (checking everyone’s ID), while PAM is the vault manager (granting limited, closely monitored access to critical assets).
👉 Both are essential for a Zero Trust strategy and compliance.

IAM=Who you are. PAM=what you can do and when.

Love the analogy of IAM as the building desk and PAM as the vault manager. Super easy to understand!

One of the biggest mistakes organizations make is implementing IAM but neglecting PAM, leaving critical systems exposed.

I’d also add that PAM often includes session recording for compliance, which is huge for regulated industries.

Clear, concise, and spot on! IAM and PAM are both critical for a Zero Trust approach.

Which do you think is harder to manage at scale: IAM or PAM?
