I got into Y Combinator because of a game I hacked together in a weekend.
The real product was a coding assistant, a VSCode extension. Nobody bit. So I turned the idea into a little web game, mostly as a demo, and that is the thing that impressed the interview.
The lesson took me years to actually learn: I dropped that game almost immediately. It got us in, people liked it, and I moved on to more serious things without ever asking why it worked. Understanding why people show up is the whole job. I skipped it because the fun part was building.
I still catch myself doing this. New idea, new build, skip the boring question. Knowing the pattern doesn’t fully turn it off.
